In case you didn’t know, Carissa Moore is a professional surfer and four-time world champion. Moore won the 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2019 WSL Women’s World Tour and will be one of the 20 women in the 2020 Japan Olympics as surfing makes its debut in the 2020 Olympics.

Moore didn’t come out of nowhere though, she has been making waves since she started competing. Collecting wins at the NSSA Junior Surf Competitions and helped Hawaii get a victory in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship. On top of her 11 NSSA amateur titles, Carissa became the youngest champion at a Triple Crown of Surfing event when she won the Reef Hawaiian Pro and was also named Women of the Year by Glamour Magazine and inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame in 2014.

Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii Carissa Moore started surfing with her dad off the beaches of Waikiki when she was just five years old.

“Dad taught me how to surf when I was about 4 or 5 years old and I was immediately hooked.”

Surfing will make its Olympic debut in Japan in 2020. The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee decided to add surfing to the Olympics to create a youthful and vibrant energy that is packed with culture.

Riding waves dates back to ancient Polynesian living in Hawaii and Tahiti; we have Duke Kahanamoku to thank for popularizing surfing by winning three gold medals in swimming at the Stockholm (1912) and Antwerp (1920) Games. Kahanamoku is referred to as “the father of modern surfing” and planted the seeds for surfing in the Olympics by expressing his dream to see the sport become an Olympic sport while accepting his medal on the podium of the 1912 Games.

The 20 men and 20 women will compete in the ocean where they can show the true art of surfing. The condition of waves, the direction and strength of the wind and the tidal fluctuation all being factors during the competition which shows no two waves are the same and the best have to be able to adjust and balance between competition against each other and the changing conditions of nature.
