The Kulani Kinis size chart will tell you to measure your bust and hips. What it won't tell you is the difference between a narrow triangle and a wider one, whether the Cheeky V or the Y Cheeky is right for the look you're after, or that Crinkle colorways in bikini bottoms are the one real exception to an otherwise very consistent brand. After fitting hundreds of customers into Kulani Kinis at our Tampa boutique, here's the conversation we actually have with people before they order.
The Short Answer
Kulani Kinis runs true to size across almost every style, so in most cases your usual size is the right place to start.
One thing worth knowing upfront: many Kulani styles are built with adjustable ties, which means if your size happens to be sold out, a neighboring size often fits beautifully. That's genuinely one of the strengths of this brand — the adjustability built into most tops and many bottoms means you're rarely stuck.
What the size chart still can't tell you is how the styles differ from each other in terms of cut, construction, and feel. Two tops can be the same size and fit completely differently based on triangle width, cup structure, or how much they support your bust. Two bottoms can be the same size and give you an entirely different look depending on the cut. Once you understand what each style does, the rest is easy.
Kulani Tops: What to Expect from Each Style
Kulani tops range from minimal triangles to structured underwire. The question isn't which size you are — it's which construction matches what you're looking for.
Looking for support?
The Halter Bralette Bikini Top is Kulani's best-selling top for a reason. A double-strap halter design — two ties at the neck rather than one — delivers noticeably more lift and hold than a typical single-tie triangle. Women who've written off halter tops for their bust size are often genuinely surprised by this one. Fully adjustable, which also means a neighboring size usually works beautifully if yours happens to be sold out.
The Gathered Stitch Bralette Bikini Top is a newer addition and already a best seller. Fixed triangle cups create consistent lift and shape that a loose triangle simply can't — think of it as the more sculpted option in the collection. If you have a larger cup and want to avoid any side spillage, going up a size works well here.
For the most structured option in the lineup, the Ditzy Underwire Bra Bikini Top is one of our favorite Kulani tops with actual underwire and adjustable bra-style straps. The cups fit well; the one thing to know is that the band can run snug, so go by your band measurement around your ribs rather than defaulting to your cup instinct.
Looking for the classic triangle?
The Classic Tie Halter Bikini Top is exactly what it sounds like — Kulani's most classic, unfussy triangle with a single neck tie and full coverage. If you just want a great bikini top that works with everything, this is always the recommendation.
The Strapless Bandeau Bikini Top is a top-two best seller and converts a lot of people who think they don't love strapless. An adjustable back tie keeps it more secure than a typical bandeau, and the way it sits on the body is genuinely flattering across a wide range of bust sizes. Some people size down for a slightly snugger hold.
Looking for minimal?
Kulani offers several tops with a narrower, more compact triangle: the Soft Knot Halter, Trio Ring Triangle, Shirred Triangle, Bind Tie Halter, and Frill Halter Bralette. All fit true to size. The thing to know: because the triangle is narrower than the standard Halter Bralette, if side coverage is something you care about, sizing up is an easy fix. Stay true for the minimal-triangle look; go up if you want a bit more on the sides.

The Twist Bandeau is in a category of its own — a minimal strapless top with a rubber lining to prevent sliding, built entirely for tanning and lounging. Not designed for activities or support. Size up for a fuller fit.
Kulani Bottoms: What Each Style Actually Gives You
All Kulani bottoms fit true to size. What varies is the cut — once you know what each style gives you, the choice gets pretty simple.
The versatile middle:
The Cheeky V Bikini Bottom is Kulani's flagship bottom — 70+ colorways and genuinely works for almost everyone. Moderate cheeky with a V-shaped waistband and high leg. Not a thong, not full coverage — the sweet spot. The high leg adds visual length to the legs; the V-waist creates a naturally flattering, cinching effect. If you're not sure where to start with Kulani bottoms, this is it.
Thong styles:
Kulani has several thong options, each with its own construction.
The Y Cheeky Bikini Bottom — V-shaped waistband, high leg, minimal rear. The elongating silhouette makes legs look like they go on forever, and people come back for it in multiple colorways. It's one of those loyalty styles.
The Retro Y Thong Bikini Bottom is the Sand Surf Co. team's personal favorite. Same thong-level cut and high-leg V as the Y Cheeky, but with scrunchie-like elastic at the sides that rests on the body without rolling or digging in. If you're deciding between the two: both are thongs, but the Retro Y stays put all day. That's the difference.
The High Leg Thong Bikini Bottom has a retro '90s feel — high leg, higher waist, straight across the back rather than V-shaped. Thong with a snatching effect even without a seam running down the center. Between sizes? Go up — the waistband has a little less give than most Kulani styles.
Full coverage:
The Minimal Full Coverage Bikini Bottom is a best seller for a specific reason: full rear coverage that somehow never looks boxy. The "minimal" in the name refers to the front styling — traditional and flattering, not oversized. Women who love Kulani prints but prefer more coverage in the back gravitate to this one every time.
Boy short:
The Micro Swim Short brings boy-short styling with a very short inseam and low-to-mid rise — the most coverage in the Kulani lineup while still looking completely beach-ready.
The One Real Exception: Crinkle and Tapestri Fabrics
One fabric rule worth knowing: if the bottom you want comes in Crinkle or Tapestri fabric, size up. Both textures run smaller than Kulani's standard, so we always recommend going up one size in any bottom offered in these fabrics — no exceptions.
For everything else, your usual size is the answer.
If You're Between Sizes
Size up if you'd like a bit more coverage; stay at your usual size for the intended silhouette.
For tops: if you're shopping one of the narrower-triangle styles and side coverage matters to you, going up a size usually looks great. Standard or wider-triangle tops work well in your true size throughout the range.
For bottoms: true size gives you the cut each style was designed for. If you're between sizes and want a touch more coverage in the rear, going up one does it cleanly.
Tops and Bottoms Are Sold Separately
Every Kulani Kinis top and bottom is sold individually — which means if your proportions call for a medium top and a small bottom, or a large top and a medium bottom, there's no compromise. Order what fits each piece. That's exactly what the separate-sizing model is designed for, and it's one of the reasons this brand has such a loyal following.
Kulani Kinis Size Charts
Start with Kulani Kinis' official body measurements below to find your recommended starting size. Then use the boutique guidance throughout this article to choose the right style, coverage, and construction for what you're looking for — that part is where the fit really gets decided.
How to measure:
Bust: Wrap your measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust. Stand up straight and keep the tape relaxed — not squeezed tight.
Underbust: Wrap your measuring tape around your rib cage where the band of a bra would sit. Keep it relaxed and secure.
Hips: Place both feet together and wrap a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your hips — generally around 20 cm below your natural waistline.

Our Most-Asked Kulani Kinis Questions
"Does Kulani Kinis run true to size?"
Almost universally, yes. Your usual size is the right starting point. The one exception is Crinkle and Tapestri fabric colorways in bikini bottoms — we always recommend sizing up there. Everything else: start with your usual size.
"Which Kulani top works best if I have a larger bust?"
Start with the Halter Bralette. The double-strap halter construction provides significantly more support than a typical single-tie triangle, and it works across a wide range of cup sizes. If you want more structure, the Gathered Stitch Bralette's fixed cups create reliable lift and shape. The Ditzy Underwire Bra Bikini Top is the most supportive option in the lineup. There's a Kulani style for every bust — it's really about knowing which construction to reach for.
"What's the difference between the Cheeky V and the Y Cheeky?"
The cut. The Cheeky V is a moderate cheeky — more than a thong, less than full, and the most versatile bottom in the lineup. The Y Cheeky is a thong. Both have a V-shaped waistband and a high leg silhouette, but the rear coverage is genuinely different. Come see us in the boutique and we'll walk you through both. Online: Cheeky V for moderate coverage, Y Cheeky or Retro Y Thong for thong.
"Can I order different sizes in my top and bottom?"
Yes — and if your proportions call for it, we'd always encourage it. Every top and bottom is sold separately so you can get the right fit for each piece. Mixing sizes is completely normal and by design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kulani Kinis run true to size? Almost always, yes. Kulani fits true to size across the vast majority of styles. The one exception is Crinkle and Tapestri fabric colorways in bikini bottoms, where we consistently recommend sizing up. For everything else, your usual size is the right starting point.
What's the difference between Kulani's bottom styles? The cut — and specifically how much each one gives you in the rear. The Cheeky V is a moderate cheeky: not a thong, not full coverage, and the most versatile option in the lineup. The Y Cheeky and Retro Y Thong are both thongs with V-shaped waistbands and high leg silhouettes — the Retro Y has scrunchie elastic sides that stay in place all day. The Minimal Full Coverage Bottom provides full rear coverage with a flattering traditional front. The Micro Swim Short is the most coverage available. All fit true to size.
Can I mix and match Kulani Kinis top and bottom sizes? Yes — and it's by design. Every top and bottom is sold separately so you can order what fits each part of your body. Different sizes on top and bottom is completely normal and encouraged.
What are Crinkle and Tapestri fabrics, and why size up? These are specific fabric textures available in certain Kulani colorways for bikini bottoms. Both run smaller than Kulani's standard fit, so we recommend going up one size in any bottom offered in Crinkle or Tapestri. Check the product listing for fabric details before ordering.
